The Thames Tunnel, the world’s first underwater tunnel, is still in use 175 years after its long-delayed opening, but you can’t shop there anymore. An engineering marvel, the Thames Tunnel saw some 24 million pedestrians pass through before it was converted to rail use for the Underground in 1865.

Who is building the Thames Tideway Tunnel?

Thames Water awarded the £635 million construction contract to the MVB joint venture of Morgan Sindall, VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche, in January 2010. Construction began in 2010 and on 28 January 2016 the Mayor of London (Boris Johnson) confirmed the tunnel open.
