Can you put cellulose over fiberglass insulation?

By Emma Miller |

Can you put cellulose over fiberglass insulation?

Adding new cellulose insulation on top of existing fiberglass insulation is called “capping”. If you have some insulation in your sidewalls, cellulose can usually still be forced in with the dense-pack method to achieve the desired R-factor.

Can you mix insulation types?

You can mix different types of blown-in insulation. Rather than removing and replacing previously installed material, you can blow in the same (or a different) kind of insulation to save money and time.

Can you put blown-in insulation over batt insulation?

If the vapor retarder is correctly positioned, that is under the insulation directly against the ceiling, you can blow insulation over the batts. In fact, the batt and blow approach is a recommended and common technique for overcoming the endemic problems of batt installation.

What is better blown-in cellulose or fiberglass?

Compared to fiberglass, cellulose is a superb air-blocker. Air moving through a vented attic deposits dirt and dust into fiberglass batts; this is called wind-washing. Dirty fiberglass batts have a significantly reduced R-value. Because it is denser than fiberglass, cellulose is much more resistant to wind-washing.

How long will cellulose insulation last?

20 to 30 years
Cellulose Insulation The typical lifespan is 20 to 30 years, with degradation beginning as early as 15 years after installation. As with other types of insulation, severe weather or outside interference can reduce the lifespan.

Does doubling the insulation increase the R-value?

ABOUT INSULATION The thermal barrier of a home should consist of a continuous layer of insulation on all sides—including the lowest floor, the exterior walls, and the ceiling or roof. Doubling the thickness of insulation will double the insulation’s R-value, cutting heat loss in half.

What is in cellulose insulation?

Modern cellulose insulation is made from either 75 to 85 percent ground-up recycled paper or recycled denim. It is heavily treated – around 15 percent by volume – with boric acid, borax, or ammonium sulfate.

Can you put fiberglass over foam board?

Fiberglass will bond to almost any surface, including wood, foam, metal and even plastic. For applications such as boats, the fiberglass is applied over foam.

Can you put foam board over studs?

Stick the foam boards with the help of the adhesive between the wall studs. The adhesive needs to be of good quality, preferably superglue or an industrial adhesive. Once they are positioned appropriately, hammer them to apply pressure so that they get stuck firmly.

Is cellulose insulation OK?

Cellulose insulation is safe. It is made of paper, but the chemical treatment provides it with permanent fire resistance. In fact, many professionals consider cellulose to be more fire-safe than fiberglass.

What are the disadvantages of cellulose insulation?

Disadvantages. Installation costs for cellulose can be higher than for fiberglass. Cellulose insulation creates an enormous amount of dust when it is installed, so a certified breathing mask is absolutely essential. Dry-blown cellulose sags and settles, reducing its R-value over time.
